What is a DXF file?
DXF shipped alongside the very first release of AutoCAD in 1982, created so that other programs could read and write AutoCAD drawing data without reverse-engineering DWG. Autodesk publishes the DXF specification, and the ASCII encoding is plain text, which made it easy for thousands of applications to adopt.
Today DXF is the default way 2D geometry moves between drafting tools and machines: laser cutters, plasma tables, CNC routers, and nesting software all consume it. The format technically supports the same entity types as DWG, including 3D, but its role in practice is overwhelmingly 2D exchange.
Where these files come from
DXF files travel between drafting tools and fabrication: profiles sent to laser or plasma cutting, layout exports for other departments, and drawings exchanged with partners who do not run AutoCAD.
How to import DXF files into Moicon
As simple as four steps, from file to factory floor.

Upload your model
In the Moicon dashboard, select Add asset and drag and drop your .dxf file.

Let it process

Step 3
Name and organize it
Give the asset a name, add a thumbnail so it is easy to spot, and file it under the categories your team uses in the asset library.
Step 4
Place it in your project
Open your project and drop the asset into the viewport. From there you can position, clone, and scale it like any other asset in your twin.
DXF FAQ
When should I use DXF instead of DWG?
Use DXF when the receiving software is not AutoCAD-based. DWG is richer as a native format, but DXF exists precisely to be read by everything else.
Is DXF only for 2D?
No, the format can store 3D entities too. In practice most DXF traffic is 2D profiles and drawings, because tools that work in 3D usually prefer richer formats.
