What is a IFC file?
IFC is the open standard for exchanging BIM data, maintained by buildingSMART International and standardized as ISO 16739. Where a mesh format stores shapes, IFC stores meaning: a wall is a wall, a duct is a duct, and each element carries classifications and property sets alongside its geometry.
IFC exists so building data can cross tool boundaries. Every serious BIM application imports and exports it, and many public construction projects mandate IFC deliverables under the openBIM banner. IFC 2x3 and IFC 4 are the versions most commonly encountered in the wild.

IFC files appear wherever multiple firms coordinate on a building: consultant exchanges, clash-detection workflows, public-sector projects with openBIM mandates, and as-built handover packages.
How to import IFC files into Moicon
As simple as four steps, from file to factory floor.
Step 1
Upload your model
In the Moicon dashboard, select Add asset and drag and drop your .ifc file.
Step 2
Let it process
Moicon translates IFC files through Autodesk Platform Services, the service behind its support for more than 70 formats. Translation time depends on the size and complexity of the model and the current service load.
Step 3
Name and organize it
Give the asset a name, add a thumbnail so it is easy to spot, and file it under the categories your team uses in the asset library.
Step 4
Place it in your project
Open your project and drop the asset into the viewport. From there you can position, clone, and scale it like any other asset in your twin.
IFC FAQ
How is IFC different from a Revit file?
RVT is Autodesk's native, editable project format. IFC is the neutral snapshot exchanged between tools: complete in geometry and data, but not meant to be edited the way a native model is.
Which IFC version should I ask for?
IFC 2x3 remains the most widely supported in practice, with IFC 4 adoption growing. For viewing purposes, either carries the building faithfully.
Does Moicon accept IFC uploads?
