Import JT files into your digital twin

The lightweight format automotive OEMs use to review entire vehicles. JT files slot naturally into a digital twin built for the same purpose: seeing everything at once.

What is a JT file?

JT was developed by Engineering Animation Inc. and Hewlett-Packard as the DirectModel toolkit, passed to UGS, and has been a Siemens format since Siemens acquired UGS in 2007. It became an ISO standard in 2012 (ISO 14306). Its design goal is fast visualization of very large models: geometry is stored as tessellated facets at multiple levels of detail, with the option of embedding exact B-rep geometry when precision is needed.

That combination made JT the standard for digital mockup and design review in automotive, where assemblies run to tens of thousands of parts. PLM systems, Siemens' Teamcenter foremost among them, generate and manage JT as their visualization currency.

Where these files come from

JT files come out of PLM systems and OEM data exchanges, especially in automotive: supplier packages, digital mockup data, and design review models.

How to import JT files into Moicon

As simple as four steps, from file to factory floor.

  1. Upload your model

In the Moicon dashboard, select Add asset and drag and drop your .jt file.

  2. Let it process

Moicon translates JT files through Autodesk Platform Services, the service behind its support for more than 70 formats. Translation time depends on the size and complexity of the model and the current service load.

  3. Name and organize it

Give the asset a name, add a thumbnail so it is easy to spot, and file it under the categories your team uses in the asset library.

  4. Place it in your project

Open your project and drop the asset into the viewport. From there you can position, clone, and scale it like any other asset in your twin.

JT FAQ

Why are JT files so much smaller than the CAD originals?

Because JT stores tessellated geometry at selectable levels of detail instead of full parametric CAD data. The format was built for viewing performance, not editing.

Is JT a replacement for STEP?

They complement each other. STEP carries complete, exact product data for exchange; JT carries lightweight geometry for visualization and review. Automotive workflows commonly use both.

Does Moicon accept JT uploads?

Yes. JT is among the 70+ formats Moicon translates through Autodesk Platform Services.
